The Slovak Republic-An Unequivocal and Constant Supporter of Georgia

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Of Georgia to the Slovak Republic

It is four and a half years that I have the honour and privilege to perform my duties in the capacity of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to the Slovak Republic. Throughout these years, many remarkable and very important events have taken place in Georgian-Slovak relations. A series of high-level visits were made, significant steps were taken to strengthen bilateral legal basis, cooperation in the fields of culture and education has developed intensely. Considerable efforts were invested in the development of our cooperation in the fields of economy and trade, including ties between business communities of both countries; several business and economic forums recently held in Slovakia should be particularly mentioned in this regard.

As an Ambassador and a citizen of Georgia, I am pleased that currently the Slovak Republic is among reliable partner countries for Georgia, a friendly country that has always unequivocally and consistently supported sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within our internationally recognized borders. For instance, just lately the Slovak side made several statements condemning further provocative steps taken by Russia in relation to the Georgian territories under occupation (so called “agreements” concluded by the Russian side with the Sokhumi and Tskhinvali regimes).

Proceeding from our foreign policy priorities, it is very important that the Slovak Republic belongs to firm supporters of our European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations, in word and deed, generously sharing with us its transformation and transition experience. Notably, the Slovak Republic was among the first countries that ratified AA/DCFTA with Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine.

As far as our multilateral dimension is concerned, cooperation among Visegrad Group and Eastern Partnership countries should be underlined first. As a V4 member state and the recent V4 Chairmanship, Slovakia made particular emphasis on the development of cooperation with Georgia, considering our country as an EaP frontrunner. Specific, result-oriented projects in and for Georgia implemented in collaboration with International Visegrad Fund are worth noting in this regard.

Among the most remarkable events in the recent history of our partnership and cooperation, a visit of the President of Georgia to Slovakia should be mentioned. Apart from the participation in the Bratislava international security forum ‘GLOBSEC 2015’ in the capacity of a keynote speaker, the President held a few bilateral meetings with top and senior officials representing various countries, including the President of the Slovak Republic. Remarkably, the latter once again reiterated full support by the Slovak Republic to our European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations. It is worth mentioning, as well, that a Georgian-Slovak business forum was successfully held in the framework of the visit in question to broaden potential opportunities for cooperation between entrepreneurs from our countries.

The Embassy of Georgia to the Slovak Republic has been quite actively involved in the activities mentioned and not mentioned above to strengthen our friendly ties, to make our country more visible and recognizable and favorably perceivable by the Slovak society. It goes without saying that there is always a room for further developments, with opportunities for cooperation still to be used, whether it is about parliamentary dimension, trade relations or tourism. As Ambassador, I still have six month ahead and it is my strong hope that, with high level visits and other important events expected, very soon we may witness even more new positive developments in the Georgian-Slovak relationships.
