“The Bridge of Friendship” – the New Connection for Neighboring Countries

2014 and traversed period of 2015 was the most intense in the Georgian-Armenian relations. The high level exchange of visits of the Presidents, Prime Ministers and heads of the Parliament have been held. There was a great dynamics of ministers’ visits as well. A lot of joint projects were planned and thinking about solutions of many unsolved problems was started.

In 2014, by the credit of EBRD and the support of UNDP and European Union, Armenia started the construction of a new checkpoint at the border of Georgia in the section of Sadakhlo – Bagratashen. The construction of large bandwidth bridge on the river Debeda is the part of this project. During the visit of the President of Armenia with the initiative of Georgian side it was decided that a new bridge would be jointly constructed. The decision was taken to call the new bridge the “Bridge of Friendship”.

Now all negotiations connected with the construction of the bridge have been completed. This was a very difficult process. Building standards in two countries, other technical and financial details had to be taken in mind. Relevant agreement between two sides was signed. The agreement was ratified by both countries’ parliament. The new bridge construction agreement shows that both governments are ready to cooperate densely in order to implement joint projects, what will bring a progress to the development of Georgia and Armenia’s economies.
