Spain Has decided to Appoint a Charge d’Affairs to Georgia

I am honored to represent Georgia to the Kingdom of Spain in my capacity as an Ambassador of Georgia for the second time. I was privileged to undertake this responsible post during the first years of the opening of the Embassy of Georgia in Spain in 2006-2009 and this time I represent my country in Spain since 2012. The embassy is also accredited in Algeria, Andorra and Morocco.

We consider Spain as our friend that stands strongly stands for our sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as supporting our European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations. With Spain we share the common universal values of democracy and liberty. I would like to underline that during the recent years our relations with Spain have significantly developed and strengthened in different spheres of cooperation. I am confident that this process of rapprochement will continue steadily in the future.

During the last year several important developments took place in relations between Georgia and Spain that should be highlighted:

First of all, I would like to mention that on July 28, 2015 Spain officially announced the ratification of the Association Agreement between Georgia and the EU. This fact was estimated in the official statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain as “another example of Spain’s firm commitments to Georgia, which constitutes a key element in developing relations between Georgia and the EU”. We are confident that when this agreement will start functioning entirely, it will bring new opportunities for our economic and trade relations, as well as opening Spanish markets for Georgian producers.

The fact that the Government of Spain has decided to appoint a charge d’affaires of Spain to Georgia will hugely contribute to developing our relations. We hope that in the near future we will have a fully pledged embassy of Spain in Georgia.

This year was marked with a number of high level visits from the Georgian side. Form October 2014, till May 2015 the Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, the Minister of Agriculture, the Minister of Interior, the Minister of Defense, the State Minister on European and Euro-Atlantic Integration and the Mayor of Tbilisi paid visits to Spain and held a number of productive meetings with their Spanish counterparts. All these visits have been carried out in a friendly and cordial atmosphere that is yet another demonstration of our countries strong intentions to develop and strengthen friendly ties that already exist between us.

Furthermore, with great pleasure I would like to mention that this year on August 11, 2015 Tbilisi will host the UEFA Super Cup with the participation of the two Spanish football teams: Barcelona and Seville. This fact, besides being important event for football fans, is a very joyful occasion for me, as an Ambassador of Georgia to Spain, as it constitutes a great opportunity to show our country to Spanish guests, who will visit Georgia during these days. I am confident that after this event more people in Spain will have a positive vision of Georgia.
