Main functions and responsibilities:

  • Working out and presenting materials, recommendations and proposals regarding Georgia’s relations with the European countries, based on the analysis of bilateral relations;
  • Conducting negotiations, within the scope of the Department’s competence, with the state authorities and foreign ministries of other countries, as well as with the international organizations, international institutes and diplomatic missions;
  • Submitting proposals and recommendations for consideration to the leadership of the Ministry regarding the planning and implementation of Georgia’s foreign policy;
  • Taking part in the process of drafting and negotiating Georgia’s international treaties; submitting proposals and recommendations for consideration to the leadership of the Ministry regarding the conclusion, implementation, suspension and termination of international treaties; conducting negotiations with the European countries in coordination with the respective agencies;
  • Facilitating, within the scope of the Department’s competence, the dissemination of information regarding Georgia’s foreign and domestic policy abroad;
  • Coordinating, within the scope of the Department’s competence, the timely implementation of instructions of the Ministry by Georgia’s diplomatic representations abroad;
  • Submitting, within the scope of the Department’s competence, proposals and recommendations regarding the candidates to be appointed at Georgia’s diplomatic representations abroad;
  • Promoting and coordinating Georgia’s participation and cooperation within the framework of GUAM;
  • Issues relating to the delimitation and demarcation of the Georgian state border and to border relations.
