Main functions and responsibilities:

  • Coordinating Georgia’s foreign relations and cooperation in the areas of culture, education, science, and the protection of cultural and historical heritage;
  • Popularizing Georgian culture, tangible and intangible heritage, as well as promoting Georgia’s scientific and intellectual potentiality abroad by assisting various agencies to organize Georgia’s  Days and art and science exhibitions; preparing respective proposals and recommendations;
  • Contributing to respective activities towards the protection of Georgia’s cultural and historical heritage abroad and preparing respective proposals and recommendations;
  • Promoting the development of cooperation with Georgian fellowmen and Georgian communities as well as with various groups and associations of friendship with Georgia abroad; facilitating the establishment and functioning of centres of Georgian culture and  Georgian studies;
  • Promoting the development of relations with the foreign countries and international organizations in the areas of protection of Georgia’s cultural and historical heritage abroad and relations with Georgian communities abroad; preparing respective proposals and recommendations;
  • Coordination cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); carrying out the functions of the Secretariat of the UNESCO National Commission and providing it with diplomatic support; pursuing cooperation with the UNESCO Headquarters and with Georgia’s Permanent Representation with the UNESCO;
  • Coordinating the process of Georgia’s accession to the international treaties regulating the issues that come within the scope of the UNESCO’s competence;
  • Preparing proposals and recommendations regarding the nomination of Georgia’s candidates or the support of the candidates of other countries for the UNESCO’s governing and auxiliary bodies;
  • Ensuring the general coordination of the Georgian delegation’s participation in the meetings of the UNESCO’s General Conference, Executive Board and other bodies and committees;
  • Promoting the development of cooperation with other international governmental and non-governmental organizations in the areas of culture, education and science;
  • Preparing proposals regarding the conclusion, implementation, suspension and termination of international treaties on the protection of culture, education, science and cultural heritage.
