Speaking points, FM Kvirikashvili in AFET

17 November 2015

Chairman, Honorable members of the European Parliament

First of all, today, at this is challenging time for all of us, I wish to express my sincere condolences to the people and the Government of France. I, personally and on behalf of the Government of Georgia, strongly condemn the terrorist attacks of last Friday.

Dear Members of the European Parliament,

I am grateful for the opportunity to address you in my new capacity as Georgia’s Foreign Minister. Your consistent support for Georgia’s European perspective, its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as reflected in numerous EP resolutions, has a great value to us. Your principled stance recognizing the right of every nation to make sovereign choices is especially important in these testing times when threats to our common security and stability abound.

We welcome the European Parliament’s continued engagement, as demonstrated by the recent visit to Georgia of the EU-Georgia Parliamentary Association Committee. Georgia's Association Agreement with the EU has a clear parliamentary dimension. This is why my colleague the Justice Minister and I have taken the initiative to address the AFET committee today, and we thank you for welcoming us.
