The Georgian Foreign Minister has met Austria’s Federal Minister for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs Austria’s Federal Minister for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs

On 3 June 2016, in the frames of the visit to Vienna, Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze met Austria’s Federal Minister for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs Austria’s Federal Minister for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs Sebastian Kurz.

Discussions focused on bilateral and multilateral co-operation. Mikheil Janelidze thanked the Austrian colleague for the strong support of Georgia’s European aspirations, sovereignty and territorial integrity. In the context of bilateral co-operation, the sides underlined the need to intensify the economic relations with due regard for beneficial business climate and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Areas (DCFTA) with the EU.

The two Ministers welcomed the successful co-operation in the spheres of energy, environment protection, justice, culture, education, etc., and expressed the readiness to work in the mentioned direction with a view to enhancing the partnership between the countries. The Ministers also underlined that the opening of the Embassy of the Republic of Austria in Tbilisi this autumn would strengthen the bilateral relations.      

Talking points also included the ongoing developments in Georgia’s occupied regions, the existing challenges in the region and the relations with the neighbouring countries. In the context of multilateral co-operation, Mikheil Janelidze and Sebastian Kurz focused on Austria’s OSCE Chairmanship in 2017 and on the future role of the Austrian side in encountering challenges existing in the region.
