The Georgian Foreign Minister has received the first Austrian ambassador to be based in Tbilisi

Newly-appointed ambassador of the Republic of Austria to Georgia Arad Benkö presented copies of his credentials to Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze.

It is interesting to note that the Austrian embassy to Georgia will be based in Tbilisi for the first time.

The Georgian Foreign Minister congratulated the ambassador on his appointment and wished him success in his future endeavours. Mikheil Janelidze expressed the hope that the opening of the Austrian embassy in Tbilisi will contribute to the further strengthening of bilateral relations, including economic co-operation, between the two countries.

He emphasised the close political, trade-economic, cultural and people-to-people contacts between the two countries and spoke about the need to exchange high- and highest-level visits and to further develop partner co-operation between the two countries.

Arad Benkö, for his part, reaffirmed the Austrian Government’s full support for Georgia.

Discussions during the meeting focused on the ongoing processes in Georgia, the importance of granting Georgia visa-free travel with the EU and the progress achieved in this direction.

While on the theme of multilateral co-operation, the Minister paid special attention to the Austrian chairmanship of OSCE in 2017.
