The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will open its embassy in Tbilisi

26.04.2018 – At a meeting held between Ambassador of Georgia to Saudi Arabia Giorgi Janjgava and representatives of the Saudi Arabian Foreign Ministry, a decision was made to open an embassy of Saudi Arabia in Tbilisi.

“Considering the desire to develop and further promote the relations between Saudi Arabia and Georgia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia plans to open its embassy in Tbilisi, Georgia” – reads the official note of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia.

It needs to be noted that Georgia attaches great importance to the need to intensify co-operation with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. For this end, an embassy of Georgia was set up in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in January 2015 that made a considerable contribution to the development of bilateral and multilateral relations between the two countries, including in the political, military, trade-economic, investment and tourism sectors.

Georgia and Saudi Arabia actively co-operate in the format of political dialogue between the foreign ministries of the two countries, inter-parliamentary co-operation is also close.

In terms of co-operation in multilateral formats, it needs to be emphasized that Saudi Arabia was the first Arabian country to support Georgia’s IDP resolution at the UN.
In terms of co-operation in the areas of trade, economy and tourism, it needs to be emphasized that the amount of direct Saudian investments in Georgia has exceeded 100 million USD.  Positive dynamics is observed in tourism as well. Up to 60 thousand Saudi Arabian citizens visited Georgia in 2017 alone.

The increase in tourism will be further facilitated by the entry to the Georgian market of the Saudi Arabian national air carrier Flynas, which is due to launch direct flights to Tbilisi from June 2018 from such large cities of Saudi Arabia as Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam.
