Resolution condemning recognition of Georgian occupied regions by Syria has been submitted to the U.S. Congress

08.02.2019, Washington – US Congressman Francis Rooney presented a resolution to the US Congress condemning the decision by the Syrian Arab Republic to recognize Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia as independent of Georgia.

The Minister thanked the congressman for his firm support of Georgia. According to him, introducing this Resolution is a clear demonstration of U.S. strong and unequivocal support for Georgia.

The Resolution reiterates the US’ firm support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and condemns the occupation of the two Georgian regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia.

“Georgia has been a reliable partner in promoting peace and democracy in the Eurasia region” – reads the resolution.

According to the Resolution “The House of Representatives condemns the decision by the Syrian Arab Republic, which is a client state of the Russian Federation, to recognize the independence of the regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia”.

The Resolution highlights that Georgia has been a committed partner of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and has contributed significant troops and resources to the NATO missions in Afghanistan and the Multi-National Force in Iraq. According to Congressman Francis Rooney “Georgia is one of the strongest U.S. allies in the continent of Eurasia”.

The Resolution reads that “the Russian Federation, in its effort to disrupt the West and its allies, will use failed states such as the Syrian Arab Republic to push its geopolitical agenda and lend credibility to the territories it illegally occupies… The United States and its partners must stand up against the Russian Federation’s expansion into territories of the former Soviet Union”
