David Zalkaliani has met with the European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in Georgia

15.03.2017, Tbilisi –  Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani held a meeting with  European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in Georgia Toivo Klaar.
 
Special attention was paid to the death of Irakli Kvaratskhelia in unclear circumstances in Georgia’s occupied Abkhazia region. David Zalkaliani emphasized that the Georgian citizen was illegally detained by officers of the Russian Federal Security Service and taken to the Russian military base in the village of Nabakevi. According to the Minister, Georgia uses all instruments at its disposal to clarify the reasons behind the death and to ensure that respective measures are taken.
 
The Foreign Minister emphasized that human rights violations and cases of deprivation of life in the occupied territories have already become a tendency. In this light, the sides underlined the  importance of active involvement of the co-chairs to prevent further discrimination of ethnic discrimination of Georgian and human rights violations.
 
The sides highlighted the need to reactivate the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanisms, without any precondition, in compliance with the fundamental principles.
 
Conversations included media reports on the developments near the occupation line. It was emphasized that the EUMM  continues to monitor the situation on the ground.


The Georgian Foreign Minister thanked the European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in Georgia for the European Union’s active role and involvement in the peaceful resolution of the Russia-Georgia conflict.
