Georgia is courageously making right decisions in order to progress towards democracy” – the Former Foreign Minister of Canada

5.10.2017, Tbilisi – “Prime Minister Trudeau wanted me to have my first visit, as a special envoy to Europe to a country that is not a part of Europe, to Georgia, and the reason is that when a country is courageously making right decisions in order to progress towards democracy Canada must be there to show support” - Canada’s Special Representative to Europe and the EU Stephane Dion said when speaking at the reception dedicated to the 150th anniversary of  Canada.

The reception to mark the 25th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between Georgia and Canada was attended by the Georgian Vice Premier, Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze.
As Canada’s Special Envoy to Europe and the EU said, democracy is a working process and any democratic government should accept international benchmarks.  In this context he referred to Georgian
Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili at the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly where he highlighted Georgia’s progress based on these very standards and benchmarks.

Stephane Dion also spoke about the bilateral relations between Georgia and Canada with special focus on prospects for the strengthening of co-operation in the political parliamentary, military, trade, economic and other areas. According to Canada’s Special Envoy, there are many areas, in which Georgia and Canada should stand together. Co-operation between the two countries will bring about positive results for the entire region.
