Mikheil Janelidze has met his Portuguese colleague

19.05.2017, Nicosia Within the framework of the 127th  Session of the CoE Committee of Ministers, Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze met with his Portuguese counterpart, Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva. The two Ministers spoke about the close relations between Georgia and Portugal and the activities to mark the 25th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Special note was taken of the successful co-operation within the Community of Portuguese Language Countries. Augusto Santos Silva highly appreciated Georgians’ increased level of interest in the Portuguese language and culture and thanked the Georgian side for fruitful co-operation in the areas of culture and people-and-people contacts.
The Ministers also welcomed the forthcoming visit of the President of Georgia to Portugal and the visits of various Portuguese ministers to Georgia that will further facilitate the development of bilateral co-operation between the two countries.
The Portuguese Foreign Minister congratulated Georgia on the appointment of Georgian candidature as Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization, as well as on the launch of visa-free travel with the EU, pledging Portugal’s further support for Georgia’s integration with the European Union.
The Ministers exchanged their views over the further deepening of bilateral co-operation in various areas. Mikheil brought to the attention of his colleague the Government’s four-point plan of reforms and Georgia’s priorities in the area of European integration. The Portuguese Foreign Minister was also briefed on the latest developments and the difficult human rights situation in Georgia’s occupied territories. Augusto Santos Silva reaffirmed the Portuguese government’s  firm support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
