On 7 April 2025, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Maka Botchorishvili, held a meeting with the Envoy of the ICRC for the Missing Persons in the Caucasus, Agnes Coutou to discuss issues related to missing persons.
The meeting reviewed the important work carried out by the ICRC in Georgia, particularly in the occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions. These efforts include support for conflict-affected populations, the alleviation of severe humanitarian conditions in the aforementioned areas, and the ongoing process of clarifying the fate of persons missing as a result of the armed conflicts of the 1990s.
Special emphasis was placed on the vital role of the ICRC as a neutral mediator and humanitarian actor in addressing the issue of missing persons, including its active engagement in coordination mechanisms.
Both sides acknowledged that despite the complexity of the process, the work of the coordination mechanisms has yielded concrete and tangible results.
Minister Botchorishvili underscored the importance of active cooperation with international organizations and institutions, including the International Committee of the Red Cross.
