The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia condemns the so-called parliamentary elections held in the Tskhinvali region occupied by the Russian Federation on June 9, 2024, which blatantly violates the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders.
In the context when internally displaced persons and refugees forcibly expelled from Georgia’s occupied regions continue to be deprived of the possibility to return to their homes, and while the people on the ground are forced to live under the violation of their basic human rights and freedoms, any so-called elections held in the occupied territories are illegal and cannot have any legal effect as they contradict the fundamental principles and norms of international law.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia calls upon the Russian Federation to cease the actions that violate Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, to fulfill its undertaken international obligations inter alia the EU mediated 12 August 2008 Ceasefire Agreement, and withdraw its forces from Georgia’s territory.
