A meeting was held at the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the Norwegian Ambassador to Georgia Helene Sand Andresen to express the position of the Georgian side regarding the Norwegian Conservative Party’s decision to award a human rights prize to Mikheil Saakashvili.
The Georgian side explained its negative attitude to the aforesaid decision by the fact that Mikheil Saakashvili and many members of his government have been convicted or have already served sentences on account of criminal convictions for violation of human rights and abuse of power.
It was highlighted the decision of the Norwegian Conservative Party to honor Saakashvili does not contribute to the depolarization of Georgian society and is an insult to those who were victimized, suffered human rights violations and abuses of power that occurred during Saakashvili’s time in office. As the Norwegian Ambassador noted Saakashvili’s award does not represent the views of the Norwegian government. Rather, it is the initiative of the concrete political party.
