On 16 January 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Ilia Darchiashvili, held an introductory meeting with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Italy, Massimiliano D'Antuono, who handed copies of his credentials to the Minister.
The minister congratulated the Italian diplomat on his appointment as ambassador to Georgia and wished him success in his future work.
The sides welcomed the fruitful cooperation between Georgia and Italy based on common European values and interests.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed his gratitude for Italy's unwavering support for Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as for Georgia's EU candidate status.
At the meeting, special attention was paid to the issue of Georgia's accession to the European Union. Ilia Darchiashvili informed the Italian diplomat in detail about the progress achieved by Georgia in this direction. He expressed the hope that Italy, as one of the founding countries of the European Union, will actively continue to support Georgia on the EU path.
The sides noted the importance of the high-level dialogue established in April 2023 and the exchange of visits. Talking points included the growing trend of trade and economic relations between the two countries and the need to fully utilize the existing potential.
Massimiliano D'Antuono, for his part, confirmed Italy's firm support for Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as for its European integration.
At the end of the meeting, the parties expressed their readiness to further strengthen the political, economic and sectoral cooperation between Georgia and Italy.
