The Acting Chairman of the OSCE and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Trade, and European Affairs of Malta has visited Georgia

On 15 May 2024, Ian Borg, the Acting Chairman of the OSCE and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Trade, and European Affairs of Malta, visited Georgia. During his visit, he held a meeting with Georgia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ilia Darchiashvili. They discussed ongoing processes and challenges within the OSCE, with Georgia expressing readiness to contribute to addressing these challenges.

The meeting also addressed issues related to the Russia-Georgia conflict. The Georgian Foreign Minister thanked Malta, as the OSCE chair, for supporting its sovereignty and territorial integrity within the organization. They emphasized the importance of OSCE co-chair involvement in the Geneva international discussions. Darchiashvili updated Borg on the challenging situation in the Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions, occupied by Russia.

They also discussed the need for a law on transparency of foreign influence, highlighting its purpose to ensure transparency. Georgia expressed readiness to disclose all legal notes of international partners within the veto procedure. Additionally, they talked about Georgia's upcoming parliamentary elections in 2024, with Georgia inviting OSCE observers to ensure transparent, free, and fair elections according to international standards. The Georgian government also pledged assistance to observers for effective performance.

Both parties agreed to continue close cooperation. Borg's visit to Georgia is scheduled to conclude on 15 May, including meetings with representatives from executive, legislative bodies, and civil society in Georgia.
