The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ilia Darchiashvili has delivered a speech within the framework of the 52nd session of the UN Human Rights Council

The Georgian Foreign Minister, Ilia Darchiashvili on Monday raised the topic of the human rights situation in the Russian-occupied regions at the United Nations Human Rights Council session.

As the minister noted, with the membership of the Human Rights Council, the country sees more opportunities to contribute to the effective implementation of the Human Rights Council's mandate, including by implementing membership priorities such as protecting the rights of vulnerable groups, incorporating environmental dimension into human rights, and exploring new digital technologies to promote human rights protection. He also emphasized Georgia's strong support for the UN human rights mechanisms.

In his speech, the Minister paid particular attention to the difficult humanitarian and human rights situation in the occupied regions of Georgia, the violations of the fundamental rights of people living there, including of internally displaced persons, and the need for international monitoring mechanisms in the occupied regions. He also focused on the importance of the international community's consolidated efforts to ensure that the Russian Federation fulfills its international obligations, including under the 12 August 2008 Ceasefire Agreement.

In his speech, the minister highlighted the importance of the UN Human Rights Council’s resolution "Cooperation with Georgia". Speaking at the 52nd session of the high-level segment, Ilia Darchiashvili also spoke about the difficult situation in the world in terms of human rights protection and emphasized the severe humanitarian consequences of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

On a final note, the minister noted that Georgia will spare no effort to promote and advance human rights. It should be noted that in October 2022, Georgia was elected a member of the Human Rights Council for the term of 2023-2025.
