CHRONOLOGY OF DIPLOMATIC RELATION

Diplomatic relations between Georgia and the Kingdom of Spain were established on 9 July 1992.

The Embassy of Georgia to the Kingdom of Spain was opened in 2004.

In 2021 the consulate of Georgia to Barcelona was granted the status of Consulate General.

The Kingdom of Spain began to extend its diplomatic presence to Georgia in 1997, including via the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain to the Republic of Turkey since 2014.

In 2015 office of the Embassy of Spain headed by the charge d'Affaires was launched in Tbilisi.

In 2022 Georgia and Kingdom of Spain celebrated the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

In 2023 during the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Georgia was granted the EU candidate status.

MAIN FIELDS OF COOPERATION

Bilateral relations between Georgia and Spain are increasingly dynamic in a wide range of areas such as: economics, tourism, culture, education, and fight against crime.

The political dialogue between the two countries is being developed in line with long-term friendly relations. High-level visits are being held between representatives of the executive authorities of Georgia and Spain.  Particularly should be mentioned the working visits of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia to Madrid in November 2022, as well as visits of the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia and the Minister of Internal Affairs to Spain.

In May 2021, a high-level meeting was held between the Prime Ministers of Georgia and Spain in Madrid. The Georgian Prime Minister participated in the opening ceremony of the largest international tourism exhibition FITUR 2021, where Georgia was invited as the guest country.

Spain strongly supports the territorial integrity of Georgia and the policy of non-recognition with respect to the occupied territories. It also participates in the European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) in Georgia and supports Georgia’s European integration process.

Cooperation between the legislatures of the two countries is increasingly dynamic.  A number of important visits were held, both at the level of the chairman of the parliament, and with the participation of members of various committees.

Economic relations are also being developed between the two countries. There has been a steady increase in bilateral trade over the recent years. Spanish companies’ are interested in Georgia's economic and investment potential, especially in the infrastructure, renewable energy and tourism sectors. It should be emphasized that in 2022 Spain was Georgia’s largest investor country.

Georgia and Spain have a productive cooperation in the field of security and periodically exchange working visits between the law enforcement authorities of the two countries. In 2015 Georgia has assigned police attaché to Spain. In 2019 Spain has accredited police attaché to Georgia, with residence in Tbilisi, whose scope of competence includes police, civil guard and security issues.

Georgia and Spain enjoy a fruitful cooperation in the fields of culture and education. In recent years, Georgia participated in various important international festivals and exhibitions held in Spain, aiming at presenting Georgian diverse gastronomy and wine. In January 2024, Madrid hosted International Congress of Gastronomy-Madrid Fusion where Georgia participated as a guest country.

In September 2021, within the frames of the cinematography promotion program "Film in Georgia", two important projects were organized in Spain with the participation of the Georgian National Film Centre. Also Spanish translation of the epic Georgian poem “Knight in the Panther’s Skin” published by the University of Malaga.

As a result of important cultural and educational initiatives and projects, people-to-people contacts between the two countries are enhancing. In this regard there is a growing interest in contemporary Georgian film industry and their participation in the leading film festivals in Spain.

On 6 May 2023, as part of Europe Day celebration, the Government of Georgia organized special event "Spanish Day" in Tbilisi.

The legal framework between Georgia and Spain includes bilateral agreements in the fields security, taxation policy, culture, education and science.
