A meeting was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia with representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in the country. The First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Giorgi Zurabashvili, provided the diplomats with information regarding the conduct and outcomes of the 2025 local self-government elections, as well as the developments that took place on 4 October.
According to the Deputy Minister, the elections of 4 October were observed by 28 international and 27 domestic organizations, as well as approximately 1,000 representatives of 73 media outlets. The overall assessment confirmed that the elections were held in a peaceful and transparent manner, the electoral process was administered professionally, and Georgian citizens were fully able to exercise their democratic rights freely.
When addressing the events of 4 October, the First Deputy Minister noted that once the rally exceeded the legal limits established by the Law on Assemblies and Manifestations and the organizers began issuing calls of a violent nature, law enforcement authorities were compelled to take measures provided by law to restore public order.
Mr. Zurabashvili underscored the importance of providing an adequate and balanced assessment of the events of 4 October, emphasizing that it is crucial for international partners to distance themselves from and condemn the violent actions of some demonstrators, which resulted in injuries to several law enforcement officers and journalists, as well as damage to municipal infrastructure.
The First Deputy Minister reaffirmed to the diplomats the Ministry’s openness and readiness to continue close cooperation with international partners and the diplomatic corps accredited in Georgia.
