The memorandum of cooperation signed by the Vice Prime Minister of Ireland, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Ilia Darchiashvili.
The memorandum highlights Ireland's strong support for the European Union enlargement and in this context recognizing the European perspective of Georgia, and reaffirming that the future of Georgia and its citizens lies in the EU
The memorandum states that Ireland and Georgia will encourage dialogue and cooperation for the purpose of supporting Georgia’s EU accession process, including associated political, institutional and social-economic reforms; as well as cooperation to facilitate Georgia’s progressive economic and sectoral integration of Georgia, including into the EU Single Market, and full implementation of the AA/DCFTA.
According to the document, the sides will work closely in the field of EU CSDP, inter alia, by building capabilities to increase resilience against hybrid threats, such as in cyber security, including through further support under the European Peace Facility (EPF).
The memorandum also stresses the need to enhance dialogue and collaboration on the consolidation of international efforts for the peaceful resolution of the Russia-Georgia conflict, including through the European Union’s effective involvement in ensuring the implementation of the EU-mediated 12 August 2008 ceasefire agreement by the Russian Federation, and the European Union's support for the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia.
It should be noted that this is the first memorandum signed between the foreign ministries of the two countries.
