Within the framework of his visit to Lisbon, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ilia Darchiashvili held a meeting with the President of the National Assembly of Portugal, Augusto Santos Silva.
The sides discussed a wide range of relations between the two countries. Special emphasis was placed on the cooperation between the Parliaments of Georgia and Portugal. In this context, the importance of the visit of the chairman of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili to Lisbon in 2022 was highlighted. The sides welcomed the functioning of groups of friends in the legislatures of both countries. Discussions also focused on the European and Euro-Atlantic integration process of Georgia. The minister noted that Georgia is successfully fulfilling 12 recommendations of the European Commission.
Ilia Darchiashvili emphasized that Georgia relies on Portugal’s strong support for granting a candidate status to Georgia. Talking points included the NATO Vilnius summit and the support expressed by the Alliance for Georgia.
The sides reviewed the difficult situation created in the region as a result of the Russian war in Ukraine and its consequences for the countries of the region, as well as for the European continent as a whole. Ilia Darchiashvili thanked Augusto Santos Silva for Portugal's support of Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, as well as for its European and Euro-Atlantic integration.
