On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Russian-Georgian war, the UN Security Council, discussed at its closed session the current situation in the territories of Georgia occupied by Russia and the issue of the Russia-Georgia conflict, on 10 August 2023.
The Security Council heard a briefing by Assistant-Secretary-General Miroslav Jenča, who provided the Council members with updated information on the developments on the ground and the progress in the Geneva International Discussions.
After the meeting, the representatives of the member states of the Security Council - the USA, Albania, the United Kingdom, France, Japan and Malta - made a joint statement for the press. They reiterated strong support for Georgia's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders and expressed concern over Russia's violation of Georgia's territorial integrity. They emphasized the need for a peaceful settlement of the Russian-Georgian conflict on the basis of international law.
The United Nations Security Council members Albania, France, Japan, Malta, the United Kingdom and the United States called on Russia to fulfill its obligations under the 2008 Ceasefire Agreement, and withdraw its military and security forces from the occupied territories of Georgia without delay.
