On 21 June 2023, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Ilia Darchiashvili met with the Chairman of the lower house of the Parliament of Ireland, Sean O Fearghail.
Within the framework of the meeting, the sides welcomed the growing dynamics in the relations between Georgia and Ireland and emphasized the importance of exchanging high-level visits aimed to further deepen cooperation.
Particular attention was paid to active inter-parliamentary cooperation and the role of the Irish legislature in consolidating support to Georgia. Ilia Darchiashvili expressed his satisfaction at the resolutions adopted by the Irish Parliament in support for Georgia and expressed the hope that this practice will continue in the future.
The sides put the main emphasis on the process of Georgia's integration into the European Union. Special attention was focused on the progress made on political and sectoral rapprochement with the European Union. The Minister of Foreign Affairs spoke about Georgia’s expectations regarding the candidate status and expressed the hope that Ireland will continue to be an active supporter of Georgia. Sean O Fearghail emphasized that Dublin backs the EU enlargement policy. According to him, Ireland will continue to protect the interests of smaller countries across the EU.
At the meeting, special attention was paid to the regional security environment, which has worsened significantly due to Russia's military aggression in Ukraine. Ilia Darchiashvili provided the Irish parliamentary delegation with detailed information about the current situation in the occupied territories of Georgia. The need for the partners’ consolidated position for maintaining the issue of Georgia atop the international agenda, and in this regard, the importance of Ireland's irrevocable support was also highlighted at the meeting
