As part of his working visit to Lisbon, on 21 July 2023, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ilia Darchiashvili met with the Executive Secretary of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), Zacarias da Costa.
The sides reviewed various issues of cooperation between Georgia and CPLP. It was noted that relations with both the organization and its member states have deepened since Georgia became an associate observer of CPLP.
The CPLP member states especially emphasized their support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia. The minister spoke at length about the difficult humanitarian situation in the occupied regions of Georgia and in this context noted the importance of CPLP member states' support for the resolution "On the status of internally displaced persons and refugees from Abkhazia, Georgia and Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia, Georgia".
Discussions focused on important aspects of relations in the field of culture and education. The Minister noted that the Georgian side promotes the Portuguese language and culture in Georgia, which is evidenced by the functioning of the Camões Center at the Tbilisi State University.
The sides agreed to continue cooperation within the framework of the organization, as well as with its member countries in bilateral and multilateral formats.
