The official date of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries is June 9, 1992. The People's Republic of China was one of the first states to recognize Georgia's independence. The Chinese embassy was opened in Tbilisi in 1992, and the Embassy of Georgia in Beijing was established in 2004.
On the sidelines of the Georgian Prime Minister, Irakli Garibashvili’s visit to the People’s Republic of China, the Georgian Foreign Minister, Ilia Darchiashvili and Huang Qiang, the Governor of the People's Government of Sichuan Province, signed an agreement on the establishment of friendly relations between Georgia's autonomous Adjara region and the Sichuan Province.
On 10 May 2023, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aleksandre Khvtisiashvili met with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to Georgia, Zhou Qian. The meeting was held at the initiative of the Chinese ambassador.
On 16 April 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Ilia Darchiashvili, met with the Vice Minister of the International Department of the Central Committee of the People's Republic of China and members of the delegation.
On 24 October 2025, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Maka Botchorishvili, held a meeting with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Georgia, Zhou Qian.
